Farm Subsidies and the WTO: Can the rules govern
subsidies even as the USA forces change in world trade?
Agreeing to rules on farm subsidies was a major achievement when governments
formed the WTO some 30 years ago. Countries have mainly stayed within their WTO
limits even as they differ greatly in how they subsidize their agricultural producers. In
2025 the United States began to massively exceed WTO and other treaty limits on
import tariffs on goods. Is the WTO structure of legally binding rules and limits on farm
support also at risk of shattering? What scenarios could the future hold?
