Completed Project
The purpose of this review and knowledge synthesis is to collect, summarize, and analyze the state of global knowledge regarding (1) the role of local authorities in sponsorship, and (2) sponsorship in rural and small communities. Despite a significant number of refugees being resettled outside of major cities, largely through private sponsorship, little is known about resettlement and integration in smaller and rural communities. Knowledge about and best practices regarding the role of local authorities in, and experiences of rural and smaller places with, resettlement and integration is becoming increasingly important. Research shows that local authority and community context and networks play a large role in the successful integration of refugees into host communities (see for example Hyndman 2011; Strang 2010). Thus, this review identifies, collects and analyzes a broad range of academic and non-academic literature related to the role of local authorities and rural and smaller places in sponsorship.
