Sonia Zarrillo (Ph.D.) is an anthropological archaeologist specializing in paleoethnobotany, the study of past human–plant interactions. Her research examines the domestication, use, and dispersal of plants in pre‐Columbian South America, with a particular focus on human adaptation and plant use across elevational and ecological gradients in the Central and Northern Andes and adjacent tropical forest regions. She also maintains a strong research interest in Northern Plains Indigenous peoples, particularly in Alberta, focusing on the relationships among heritage, land use, traditional knowledge systems, and Indigenous land stewardship and sovereignty.
